Keep a portable learning record.
A reading list, a work sample, and a learner’s own description of their interests can help sustain learning. Use the permissions established by the responsible adults before transferring records between people or settings.
Offer choice in participation.
A learner may respond through writing, drawing, conversation, or a fictional example. Shared activities can establish a routine without asking children to explain family circumstances to a group.
Build on what is already meaningful.
Start with a familiar story or a question the learner chooses. Agree on one manageable activity and a time to return to it. Recognize progress through what the learner notices, makes, or understands.
